Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to read 1,000 words aloud?

At a conversational 130 words-per-minute it takes about 7 minutes 42 seconds. Faster speakers (160 wpm) finish in about 6 minutes 15 seconds; a slow, deliberate read (110 wpm) takes closer to 9 minutes.

What is a good speaking pace in words per minute?

Conversational English averages 130–150 wpm. For clear on-camera delivery aim for ~130 wpm; for energetic short-form go up to 170 wpm. Slower (110–120 wpm) suits speeches and emotional moments.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

About 600–650 words at a relaxed 120–130 wpm speech pace. Enter 5 minutes in the reverse calculator above to get the exact word budget for your pace.

Is speaking pace the same as reading speed?

No. Silent reading is roughly twice as fast (~230–280 wpm). This calculator uses spoken pace — words read out loud — which is what matters for video, speeches and teleprompter scripts.
